Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has instructed commissioners of Police (CPs) nationwide to tighten security measures in responses to escalating geographical tensions in the Middle East.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Benjamin Hundeyin, the force’s Police Public Relations Officer, the directive is part of proactive steps to prevent any potential fallout from global developments.

He directed CPs in the 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT), with particular attention to the north-west, north-east and north-central zones, “to heighten surveillance and intelligence gathering, strengthen collaboration with traditional and religious leaders, enhance visibility policing around worship centres and public spaces, and swiftly address any attempt by individuals or groups to exploit global developments to incite unrest or sectarian tension”.

He said the move is aimed at preventing the importation of external ideological or religious tensions into the country.

“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates that Nigeria will not serve as a theatre for foreign conflicts. Any attempt to import external ideological or religious tensions into the country will be met with the full weight of the law,” the statement reads.

Disu urged community leaders to continue promoting peaceful coexistence and called on citizens to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, while reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
