Tinubu Approves Committee to Drive Implementation of New Tax Laws

Tinubu-1

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a National Tax Policy Implementation Committee to coordinate the rollout of the administration’s recently enacted tax reforms.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The committee will be chaired by Joseph Tegbe, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, who has over 35 years of public and private sector experience, including his role as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa.

Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, Sanyade Okoli, will serve as secretary, while other members include Ismaeel Ahmed, Rukaiya El Rufai and several tax and fiscal policy experts.

According to the statement, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, will supervise the committee, which is mandated to consult widely across government and the private sector to ensure broad-based input throughout the implementation process.

Tinubu said the new tax laws were central to his administration’s economic transformation agenda and efforts to modernise public finance management.

“These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses.

“The National Tax Policy Implementation Committee will ensure coherent, effective, and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government,” the President said.

The NTPIC is also expected to drive inter-agency coordination, harmonise existing tax frameworks with the new statutes, and lead nationwide awareness campaigns to improve compliance.

Tegbe said the committee was prepared to work closely with stakeholders to strengthen trust in the tax system.

“We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work closely with all stakeholders to support the Minister of Finance in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust,” he stated.

Edun added that the committee would help reset Nigeria’s tax and fiscal policy landscape to enhance revenue mobilisation, curb leakages and reinforce accountability for sustainable development.

“With the establishment of this committee, Mr President has not only set the direction but also provided the authority and support needed to reset the tax system and the entire fiscal policy framework of government,” the minister said.

Over the past year, the Tinubu administration has introduced a series of new tax laws aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s tax system and boosting revenue generation.
