Lagos Condemns Assault On VIO Officials, Vows Justice
The Lagos State Government has condemned the assault on Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) at the Mile 2 axis, warning that those responsible will face the full weight of the law.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the attack as “utterly reprehensible,” stressing that it was not just an assault on the officers but an affront to the authority of the state.
“We received with profound indignation reports of the grievous incident at Mile 2, where VIOs were viciously assaulted while carrying out their lawful duties. This appalling act is a direct affront to the dignity of Lagos State and it will never go unpunished,” he stated.
Osiyemi emphasized that VIOs are legally empowered to enforce road safety laws and protect lives, noting that any attack on them undermines public order and weakens institutions created to safeguard society.
He assured that the perpetrators would be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted without delay. While the injured officers are responding to treatment, he maintained that the gravity of the incident demanded a firm government response.
The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting its personnel and ensuring that no criminal element intimidates or obstructs them in the discharge of their lawful responsibilities.
