INEC Chairman Amupitan Reaffirms Commitment To Free, Fair, And Credible 2027 Elections
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
Amupitan said preparations were already underway to further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
He spoke in his 2026 New Year message to INEC staff across the country, describing the year as critical for institutional consolidation and renewal ahead of the general elections.
He reflected on the commission’s activities in 2025 and commended staff for their dedication and professionalism.
He cited the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office on October 23, as a key achievement.
According to him, the election demonstrated INEC’s capacity to protect the integrity of the ballot through discipline, unity, and professionalism.
The INEC chairman, however, drew attention to upcoming electoral activities. These include the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February, as well as off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
He reiterated the commission’s resolve to deliver elections that are free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive at all levels, including the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan also pledged to prioritise staff welfare.
He said his leadership would focus on building a workplace anchored on equity, discipline, and mutual respect.
He urged INEC personnel to continue to uphold the integrity of the electoral system. He noted that their collective efforts remain essential to building public trust, empowering eligible voters, and ensuring that every vote counts.
The INEC chairman expressed optimism that 2026 would mark a year of significant progress for the commission, while wishing staff and their families a prosperous New Year.
