Sultanate council calls on Muslims to sight new moon

The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has directed the Muslim Ummah across Nigeria to begin the search for the new moon of Sha’aban 1446 AH on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, corresponding to the 29th day of Rajab 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.

This directive was contained in a statement signed by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, the Waziri of Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, and released on Tuesday.

The council urged Muslims to report any sightings of the moon to their nearest District or Village Head for onward communication to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The sighting of the moon signifies the beginning of Sha’aban, an important Islamic month that precedes Ramadan, the sacred period of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims.

“May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty. Amen,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the spiritual importance of this observance.

As the traditional authority on moon sighting announcements, the Sultanate Council plays a critical role in ensuring adherence to Islamic practices in Nigeria.
