Nigeria’s Super Eagles were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against South Africa in their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

The hosts went ahead in the 25th minute after captain William Troost-Ekong conceded an own goal under pressure from the Bafana Bafana attack. But Nigeria responded before the interval when defender Calvin Bassey powered home a header, despite protests from the South Africans.

The equaliser gave the Eagles a much-needed lifeline in a match where they were initially second best.

At half-time, coach Eric Chelle introduced Tolu Arokodare for Cyriel Dessers, while Bruno Onyemaechi replaced the injured Troost-Ekong. Arokodare quickly added energy to Nigeria’s attack with a strong run and shot that narrowly missed target.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Uche also tested the South African defence, but their efforts failed to yield another goal. Wilfred Ndidi was substituted in the second half after picking up an injury, raising fresh concerns for Nigeria’s midfield options.

South Africa made their own tactical switches, but Nigeria controlled much of the second half and created a late chance when Uche fired wide from close range.

Despite both sides pressing for a winner, the game ended all square, leaving Nigeria with one point that moves them provisionally into second place in their qualifying group.

The result keeps the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes alive but shows the need for sharper finishing and stronger defensive organisation as the campaign continues.
