WHO regrets US decision to withdraw, seeks dialogue

The World Health Organization has expressed regret over President Donald Trump’s recent decision to withdraw the United States from the global health body.

The announcement has sparked concerns about the potential impact on global health efforts.

In a statement released on Tuesday via its X handle, WHO highlighted its critical role in protecting health and security worldwide, including in the United States.

The WHO noted that the United States has been a key partner since its founding in 1948. “For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication,” the statement read.

The organisation also acknowledged the contributions of American institutions to WHO’s work and how they have benefited from the partnership.

The WHO expressed hope for a change in the US decision. “We hope the United States will reconsider and look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership… for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe,” it said.

Trump signed an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from WHO. The order called for a halt to US government funding and resources for the organisation. It also instructed authorities to find “credible and transparent” alternatives to handle responsibilities previously managed by WHO.

Trump had previously accused WHO of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic, a criticism that led to strained relations between the US and the organisation.
