Veteran Yoruba actor, Charles Olumo ‘Agbako,’ dies at 101

Veteran Yoruba actor, Pa Charles Olumo Sanyaolu, popularly known as Agbako passed away early Thursday morning at the age of 101.

Known for his bold characters and contributions to Yoruba cinema, Agbako was one of the oldest actors in Nigerian film history.

According to the President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan, also called Mr. Latin, Agbako’s family and the association will soon announce burial plans. Confirming the sad news, Nollywood veteran Jide Kosoko shared the loss with colleagues and fans, sparking many tributes across the industry.

“His impact on Yoruba cinema was tremendous,” said Kosoko. “We will miss his energy and his role in helping shape the future of Nigerian film.”

Agbako’s career left a deep mark on Nigerian culture, especially in the Yoruba film industry. Known for playing both comedic and villainous roles, he was admired for his unique screen presence that captivated generations. As a symbol of the evolution of Yoruba cinema, his work continues to inspire younger actors and filmmakers.

Born in the early 1920s, Agbako rose to fame by portraying complex characters in Yoruba films, making him a cherished figure across Nigeria. His death is not just a loss to the film industry but to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
