UBA Foundation Aiming To Plant One Million Trees By 2025

UBA Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has launched a major environmental initiative, aiming to plant one million trees across Africa by 2025.

This bold move positions the foundation at the forefront of the continent’s green revolution, promoting sustainability and climate action.
As part of its 2024 Tree Planting Campaign, themed ‘Our Land: Grooming a Greener Future’, UBA Foundation is championing reforestation efforts to combat climate change.

UBA Group Managing Director/CEO Oliver Alawuba emphasized the bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability during a tree-planting event at the UBA Foundation Garden in Lagos.

“We are pledging to plant one million trees across Africa by the end of 2025,” Alawuba stated. “Beyond reducing carbon, urban trees can lower temperatures by up to 12 degrees Celsius, mitigating the risks of heat-related crises.
Every tree we plant today contributes to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.”

Alawuba also linked Nigeria’s growing flood issues to climate change, stressing the importance of individual action: “Planting trees is a simple yet powerful way to address environmental challenges. Let’s make tree planting part of our daily lives to secure the future for ourselves and the next generation.”

Bola Atta, CEO of UBA Foundation, underscored the long-term impact of the initiative. “These trees are not just symbols, but crucial tools in our fight against climate change. We want to create a safer environment for our children, where cleaner air and reduced flood risks are a reality.”

The Lagos State Parks and Garden Agency (LASPARK) praised the initiative, with Mrs. Funto Aina, Head of Tree Planting, noting that UBA Foundation’s efforts align with government objectives to nurture a sustainable future.
