A devastating fire broke out at a spare parts market located under the Idumota Bridge in Lagos State on Friday night, destroying property worth millions of naira. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
According to LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received an alert about the fire at approximately 10:20 p.m. The statement read: “Following distress calls received through the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at 10:20 p.m., LASEMA activated its Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command-and-Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.”
Upon arriving at the scene LASEMA teams discovered multiple buildings used as car spare parts shops engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire, whether immediate or remote, had not been determined by the time of the report. However, the fire caused extensive damage, with goods and property worth hundreds of millions of naira destroyed.
LASEMA’s Shark Response Team, Fire Unit, and Tiger Response Team, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, collaborated to control the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. Law enforcement agencies were also present to manage the crowd and ensure safety at the scene.
Oke-Osanyintolu further noted that there were no reported casualties or injuries. Efforts to contain the remaining flames, known as “dampening down,” have begun, and teams are currently salvaging valuable property from the affected shops. Recovery operations are ongoing as efforts to fully extinguish the fire continue.
