Tinubu to attend inauguration of Ghana’s President-Elect John Mahama

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 6, 2025 (today) for Accra, the capital of Ghana, to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7.

According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy,Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s visit is at the invitation of Mahama, who had earlier visited Tinubu in December 2024.

The statement, titled “President Tinubu to Attend the Inauguration of John Mahama, President-Elect of Ghana” confirmed the longstanding personal relationship between Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana.

John Dramani Mahama was re-elected as Ghana’s president in December 2024, after previously serving as the country’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017. He will succeed President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served from 2017 to 2025.

Mahama’s victory marks a political comeback, and Tinubu is expected to join other African leaders at the swearing-in ceremony in Accra.

As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,Tinubu’s presence at the event underscores his commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and promoting peaceful transitions of power in West Africa.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, along with other senior government officials will accompany Tinubu on his second official trip to Ghana since assuming office in May 2023.
