Tinubu extends tenure of Customs Chief Adeniyi by one year

President Bola Tinubu has approved the tenure extension of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adeniyi, which is due to expire on August 31, 2025, by one year.
“The extension, approved by President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, will enable Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of this administration,” Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement Thursday.
The statement is titled ‘President Tinubu extends the tenure of Comptroller-General of Customs.’
According to the Presidency, the Adeniyi-led reforms include: The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service; The implementation of the National Single Window Project; and The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area protocol.
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service.
“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” the statement read.
Adeniyi was named Acting Comptroller-General of Customs on June 19, 2023, and later confirmed substantive CG on October 19, 2023.
Under Nigeria’s Public Service Rules, officers retire at 60 years of age or 35 years of service, whichever comes first.
Available records show that he joined the Customs Service in 1990 and turned 59 on January 19, 2025; implying an earlier retirement, having clocked 35 years of service in 2025.
