Priest replaced after US singer films provocative music video in church

A New York priest, Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, has been removed from his role after allowing American pop singer Sabrina Carpenter to film controversial scenes for her music video ‘Feather’ inside Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn confirmed in a statement that Mr. Gigantiello has been stripped of “any pastoral oversight or governance role” at the church.

This follows an investigation that revealed multiple instances of mismanagement, including unapproved financial transactions.

The music video, released in October 2023, features scenes of Carpenter dancing on the altar in a short black dress and a crucifix with profanity. These sparked outrage among parishioners and church officials.

In a statement, Bishop Robert Brennan said, “I am saddened to share that investigations conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP have uncovered evidence of serious violations of Diocesan policies and protocols.”

The Diocese initially revoked Mr. Gigantiello’s administrative powers in November 2023 after the music video backlash. He was also removed from his duties as vicar of development for the Diocese.

In a letter to parishioners, Mr. Gigantiello admitted that allowing the video shoot was a “lapse in judgment.” However, he has not commented on the allegations that led to his dismissal.

Further investigations revealed financial improprieties, including nearly $2 million in church funds transferred to accounts linked to a former staff member of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Bishop Brennan described the findings as evidence of “serious violations” and noted improper use of a church credit card for personal expenses.

Mayor Eric Adams, a central figure in the controversy, has faced multiple investigations, including charges of bribery and illegal campaign donations, leading to resignations among his top aides.
