Police recover three explosives in Maiduguri residential area

The Borno State Police Command has recovered three explosive projectiles abandoned in a sack in the Dala Kafanti area of Maiduguri.

The discovery was made after a resident reported the suspicious item to authorities.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident and detailed the swift response by the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) unit.

“On January 2, 2025, at approximately 9:25 a.m., we received a report from one Asabe James, a resident of Dala Kafanti, who discovered a suspicious sack behind her house,” Daso stated.

“Our operatives immediately deployed to the scene, secured the area, and recovered three projectiles concealed in the sack.”

Preliminary investigations suggest the explosives were dropped early in the morning by unidentified individuals.

Following the recovery, the police provided safety guidelines to residents. “We advised them to stay calm, assess their surroundings, maintain a safe distance from suspicious items, and immediately notify law enforcement,” Daso added.

Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Mohammed Lawal, assured the public of the command’s commitment to safety and urged vigilance.

“We remain dedicated to protecting lives and property. We call on residents to report any suspicious objects or activities promptly,” he stated. The public can contact the police via emergency lines: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.

This latest recovery follows the police command’s earlier announcement of retrieving 18 unexploded devices and arresting 721 suspects for various crimes in 2024.
