In an intensified effort to combat kidnapping and ensure public safety, the Nigeria Police Force has recorded significant successes in recent operations.
According to a statement by the Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, officers neutralized three kidnappers, rescued several hostages, and recovered arms and ammunition in dangerous confrontations in Benue, Nasarawa, and Bayelsa states.
On December 31, 2024, police operatives from the Vandiekya Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call regarding the abduction of one Tor Gajir in Kwande Local Government Area (LGA), Benue State.
Acting swiftly, the operatives traced the crime to a suspect, Desmond Ahar, who was apprehended. During interrogation, Ahar revealed the location of the victim, leading the police to a hideout in Adikpo, Benue State.
Upon arrival, the kidnappers opened fire on the operatives, resulting in a gunfight. Three suspects were neutralized, while others fled with injuries.
The victim was rescued unharmed and given immediate medical attention. The operation also led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, six loaded magazines, and several rounds of live ammunition. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Abandoned Vehicle Leads to Rescue in Nasarawa State
In another operation on December 28, 2024, police operatives in Nasarawa State discovered an abandoned Sienna vehicle along the Keffi-Kaduna Highway near Angwan Wayo Village. Following a trail, the officers located and rescued two hostages unharmed. The police are actively pursuing the kidnappers who fled the scene.
Intercepted Arms in Bayelsa State
On January 7, 2025, police operatives in Bayelsa State intercepted a suspect, Usman Mohammed, traveling to Rivers State. A search of his vehicle uncovered one AK-47 rifle, one Type 09 AR, two AK-47 magazines, two Type 09 AR magazines, and 120 rounds of assorted ammunition. The suspect is in custody as investigations continue.
Commendation from the Inspector-General of Police Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun lauded the operatives for their bravery and success in curbing kidnapping and safeguarding lives. “These operations are a testament to the commitment and professionalism of our officers. The Force will continue to re-strategize and enhance its operations to ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” he said.
The IGP urged citizens to remain vigilant and support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities to the police. “Public safety is a shared responsibility. We need everyone to play their part in ensuring our communities are secure,” he added.
