The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted dust haze weather conditions across the country from Monday, December 30, 2024, to Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet forecasted moderate dust haze in the northern region on Monday, with visibility expected to range between 2 to 5 kilometers. Localized visibility could drop to 1 kilometer or less throughout the day.
The North Central region is also expected to experience similar conditions of moderate dust haze, with reduced visibility within the same range.
In the southern parts of the country, NiMet predicted early morning mist or fog, followed by moderate dust haze later in the day, with visibility ranging between 2 to 5 kilometers.
For Tuesday, NiMet anticipated thick dust haze throughout the day in the northern region. The central region is expected to experience moderate dust haze with visibility dropping to as low as 1 to 3 kilometers. In the south, early morning mist or fog over coastal cities will give way to moderate dust haze during the day, with visibility also expected to range between 1 to 3 kilometers.
On Wednesday, the northern and North Central regions are likely to see thick dust haze throughout the day. The southern region will again experience early morning mist or fog, followed by moderate dust haze with visibility ranging from 1 to 3 kilometers.
NiMet warned the public about suspended dust particles in the air, advising people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to take necessary precautions.
“People with asthmatic conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather condition,” the agency stated.
The agency also urged residents to follow safety advisories and for airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.
