The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a prophetess, Mrs. Folashade Adekola, after a tragic incident involving the death of a woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, and her newborn baby.
Both died after Jumoke experienced childbirth complications inside the prophetess’s church, located in the Oke-Aro area of Akure.
According to the police, Jumoke’s brother reported the incident after discovering the circumstances of his sister’s death. The spokesperson for the state police, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest and said, “The case was reported by the deceased’s brother, that his sister died after childbirth in the church, and the prophetess is already in custody. Investigations are still ongoing.”
A family member, who requested anonymity, explained the events, stating that a church member had called Jumoke’s husband to inform him of the birth. When family members arrived, they were told the baby had not survived but that Jumoke was alive. However, they found her in critical condition, bleeding heavily. “We saw her in a pool of blood, bleeding profusely, so we rushed her to a nearby hospital,” the family member shared.
The family reportedly took Jumoke to several hospitals, but she was rejected due to the severity of her condition. Tragically, she died while receiving emergency care at the last hospital that admitted her.
After returning to the church to retrieve the baby’s body, the family was shocked by the condition of the room where the birth had taken place, describing it as unfit for any medical procedures. “The condition of the room was very worrisome, as it did not look like a delivery room,” the family member said.
Both mother and child’s bodies have been moved to the mortuary as police continue their investigation.
