Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially handed over the staff of office and certificate of appointment to Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, confirming his ascension as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
The brief but symbolic ceremony took place on Monday, January 13, at the state government house in Agodi, Ibadan. It was attended by notable dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and jubilant residents of Oyo.
While presenting the staff of office, Governor Makinde commended the Alaafin-elect for his readiness to uphold the cultural and historical legacy of the Oyo Kingdom.
“The Alaafin of Oyo is not merely a traditional ruler but a custodian of a rich history and tradition,” he remarked. “I am confident that Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a firm commitment to the unity of the Oyo Kingdom.”
The new monarch succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, who ruled for over 50 years.
In his acceptance speech, the Alaafin expressed gratitude to the people of Oyo for their support and pledged to focus on the kingdom’s growth and the well-being of its residents. “This is a call to serve, and I will prioritize cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic development in our kingdom,” he said.
The event, which was relatively low-key, marked the beginning of a new era for the Oyo Kingdom, with many looking forward to Oba Owoade’s leadership in steering the kingdom towards greater unity and progress.
As the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Woade’s reign is anticipated to carry forward the legacy of the monarchy while adapting to the challenges of the modern era.
