The Lagos State Building Control Agency, has dismissed allegations of illegal evictions and demolition threats leveled by tenants at 118, Apapa Road, Ebute-Metta (West), emphasizing its strict adherence to the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, LASBCA’s General Manager, Gbolahan Oki, clarified the agency’s operations and outlined its commitment to public safety while refuting accusations of misconduct.
The tenants alleged that LASBCA orchestrated their removal without proper inspection or due process.
They claimed the agency issued a contravention notice for a distressed structure on December 3, followed by a sealing order, and deployed police officers to enforce their eviction.
In a memorandum filed under Order 3 Rule 2 (E) of the Lagos State High Court Rules, the tenants argued that LASBCA’s actions were irregular and violated established legal procedures.
Oki addressed the claims, stating that the agency acted in accordance with the law and prioritizes public safety.
“Last year, the owners of the building were served distressed notices and instructed to conduct a Non-Destructive Test to evaluate the structural stability of the property.
However, they failed to comply, citing that the building had been leased to a developer,” Oki said.
According to Oki, a LASBCA inspection revealed severe structural deficiencies in the building, posing imminent risks to occupants and the surrounding community.
“All actions taken, including the issuance of contravention notices, sealing orders, and demolition notices, were based on rigorous due process, thorough inspections, and safety assessments,” he added.
LASBCA described the tenants’ accusations as “misleading and unfounded,” maintaining that its operations are guided by legal frameworks to prevent avoidable disasters.
The agency reiterated its commitment to lawful procedures, ensuring compliance with structural integrity standards, and safeguarding public welfare.
“LASBCA operates strictly within the confines of the law, and any claims of improper conduct are not supported by the facts,” the statement concluded.
This development comes amid heightened concerns about building collapses in Lagos State, prompting LASBCA to intensify its enforcement of structural safety regulations.
