International Organisation for Migration has announced an additional $668,000 to support emergency relief efforts in communities affected by flooding.
This funding, disclosed in a statement by IOM on Thursday, will bolster humanitarian operations led by local partners in Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi states.
These areas are among the hardest hit, with tens of thousands of residents displaced and struggling to recover from the floods.
The new allocation, made possible through the Rapid Response Fund will be implemented in collaboration with local partners, including Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative.
IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission ad interim, Paola Pace, expressed gratitude to USAID’s Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance for their support, stating, “Their contributions are vital in enabling IOM and local partners to provide life-saving assistance and help communities rebuild and recover from the catastrophic impacts of the floods.”
More than 1.3 million people across 34 states have been affected by the floods this year, with at least 320 lives lost and 740,000 people forced to flee their homes.
Additionally, over 258,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, worsening food insecurity and economic challenges in the affected regions.
In October, IOM allocated $1.8 million to nine local and international non-governmental organisations for emergency flood relief.
This second allocation raises the total funding for flood response in Nigeria to over $2.4 million in 2024.
The funds are earmarked for delivering essential aid, including emergency shelters, clean water, sanitation facilities, and multi-purpose cash assistance.
More than 228,777 people are expected to benefit from these interventions, which aim to address immediate needs while promoting long-term recovery and resilience.
IOM emphasized its commitment to working closely with government agencies, local authorities, and humanitarian partners to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated response.
The statement concluded, “These interventions are designed to address the immediate needs of flood-affected communities and to promote their recovery and resilience. IOM remains committed to delivering timely and impactful assistance to those in need.”
