Ibadan stampede: Court to decide Ooni’s ex-queen, Oriyomi’s bail Jan 13

Justice K.B. Olawoyin of the Oyo State High Court, sitting in Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, has set Tuesday, January 13, for a ruling on the bail applications filed by former Ooni of Ife’s queen, Naomi Silekunola, Agidigbo FM proprietor Oriyomi Hamzat, and Islamic High School Principal Abdulahi Fasasi.

The trio is facing charges related to the tragic stampede that occurred during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, in December 2024. The incident led to the deaths of at least 35 children, prompting their arraignment.

During the hearing on Tuesday, counsel for the accused individuals presented separate applications requesting bail for their clients. The proceedings, which lasted over five hours, saw robust arguments from both sides.

Fasasi was represented by Waheed Olajide, while Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN) appeared for Silekunola, and Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN) represented Hamzat.

On the opposing side, the state’s legal team, led by Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice Abiodun Aikomo, argued against the bail applications.

In their submissions, the defense counsel asserted that the evidence presented so far was insufficient to justify continued detention. They urged the court to grant their clients bail.

However, the state’s legal representatives countered with arguments to keep the accused in custody.

After considering the submissions, Justice Olawoyin announced that a decision on the bail applications would be delivered on January 13.

In the meantime, the suspects remain in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Agodi, Ibadan.
