How I pleaded with Abacha not to execute Obasanjo – Gowon

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed the crucial role he played in saving the life of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Gowon disclosed that he intervened to prevent the late General Sani Abacha from executing Obasanjo over the 1995 phantom coup plot.

Speaking at the Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival in Plateau State, Gowon recounted his extraordinary measures to save Obasanjo’s life. He wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading with him to do good and not evil, and even sent his wife to deliver the letter to Abacha in Abuja in the middle of the night

Gowon emphasized that the eventual release of Obasanjo and his rise to leadership was nothing short of divine intervention. He thanked God for answering his prayers and bringing peace to the nation.

The former leader also expressed concern over the persistent violence and disunity in Nigeria. He lamented that the unity he fought for during the civil war is now under threat and called for an end to the crises plaguing the nation.

Gowon urged young people to turn their hearts to God and work towards peace and unity in Nigeria. He also addressed the recurring violence in Plateau State, urging all residents to embrace peace regardless of their faiths.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who also spoke at the event, hailed the festival as a unifying moment for Plateau State. He emphasized the need for collective action to achieve the state’s prophetic destiny.

Mutfwang reaffirmed the state’s vast potential and called on citizens to work towards a brighter future. He described Plateau as a land of blessing, fertile, resource-rich, and strategically positioned by God.The event marked a significant moment in promoting unity and peace in Nigeria, with leaders calling for collective action to achieve a brighter future.
