Ghanaian actor-turned-politician John Dumelo has emerged victorious in the race to represent the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency in Ghana’s parliament.
Dumelo, who contested on the platform of the National Democratic Congress defeated Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party in the election held on Saturday.
According to BBC, Dumelo secured 40,561 votes against Alhassan’s 27,377.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Dumelo, who narrowly lost the same seat to Alhassan in the 2020 elections.
In his post-election remarks, the 40-year-old politician expressed gratitude to his constituents and pledged to focus on their needs and development.
“The people of Ghana have been calling for change, and they’ve shown that if you don’t perform well or if you’re arrogant, they will vote you out,” Dumelo said. “Let this not get to our heads; this is a valuable lesson for everyone. It’s not about money; it’s about the development of the people and addressing their needs.”
He added, “We will do our best over the next four years to bring meaningful change to Ghana and steer it in the right direction.”
Dumelo, widely known for his successful acting career, started in 1991 as a child actor in the film Baby Thief.
Over the years, he has appeared in numerous Gollywood and Nollywood productions, including The King is Mine, Black Men Rock, One Night in Vegas*, and Four Play.
