Ghana introduces visa-free travel for African countries

In a landmark decision aimed at fostering continental unity and economic integration, Ghana has launched a visa-free travel policy for all African passport holders.

According to the AFP, the announcement was made by President Nana Akufo-Addo during his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, ahead of his departure from office on January 6.

“I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year,” Akufo-Addo stated, describing the initiative as a vital step towards realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area goals.

The president highlighted the policy as integral to achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a fully integrated and connected continent by 2063.

“This aligns with the aspirations of Agenda 2063, which seeks to establish an interconnected Africa through policies that facilitate mobility and trade,” he said.

Ghana’s visa-free travel initiative builds on existing policies that previously offered visa-free entry to citizens of 26 African countries and visas on arrival for travelers from 25 others. Only citizens of Eritrea and Morocco had been required to obtain visas prior to arrival.

The move also strengthens Ghana’s efforts to position itself as a cultural and tourism hub. This follows the success of the 2019 “Year of Return,” a campaign that commemorated 400 years since the transatlantic slave trade and celebrated the African diaspora.

The initiative attracted thousands of international visitors, including prominent global figures, and some participants were granted citizenship, further enhancing Ghana’s global reputation.

“This policy demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to continental solidarity and our readiness to lead efforts for Africa’s economic integration,” Akufo-Addo said.
