Fire outbreak destroys shops worth millions in Ibadan

A fire broke out at the Ibadan end of the Lagos Expressway in Oluyole Local Government Area on Friday, destroying properties worth millions of naira.

The fire razed four shops while others were saved due to the quick response of the Oyo State Fire Services.

The fire started in the early hours of Friday, with eyewitnesses saying thick smoke was visible from a distance. Initially, some people thought the smoke was from a burning bush along the expressway. However, it was soon discovered that several shops near Topfeeds had caught fire.

One eyewitness said, “We thought it was just a bush burning, but when we got closer, we saw that shops were on fire. We tried to control it, but it was too much.”

The Oyo State Fire Services were alerted about the fire at 5:50 a.m. on Friday. The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services, Rev. Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a report.

According to the report, the fire services were led by ACFS Adediji, who arrived at the scene to find the four shops already engulfed in flames. The fire was quickly contained, preventing it from spreading further.

Akinyinka said, “Four shops were destroyed, but thanks to our quick response, we were able to save many other shops and materials. The properties lost are worth millions of naira, but billions of naira worth of goods were protected.”

The fire was traced to an unattended naked flame left by a woman who was cooking in one of the affected shops. Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident.
