A fire outbreak at the Old Airport Junction in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday ravaged several shops and offices, leaving business owners reeling from significant losses.
The incident reportedly began around 4:00 pm, prompting swift action by fire services from Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas.
An eyewitness, John Michael described the chaotic scene: “I stepped out of my office and saw flames everywhere. Although I’m unsure of the cause, I immediately called the fire service. Thankfully, their teams responded promptly and are currently working to contain the fire.”
The Chairman of Jos South Local Government Area, Silas Dung, confirmed the incident while visiting the site to assess the damage. “I was just informed about the fire and came straight to the scene. The scale of the destruction is distressing,” he stated.
An official from the Jos Fire Service, speaking anonymously, disclosed that firefighters were swiftly deployed to prevent the blaze from spreading further.
“Our team acted immediately upon receiving the distress call, and we’ve managed to contain the fire,” the official said.
This disaster comes weeks after a similar fire engulfed the Katako Timber Market in Jos North Local Government Area, destroying over 107 shops and leaving more than 200 people, mostly carpenters, devastated. Goods worth over ₦1 billion were lost in that incident.
