The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its condolences to the government and people of South Korea following the devastating crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216, which claimed the lives of 179 passengers.
The crash occurred on Sunday, December 29, 2024, as the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea.
The plane skidded off the runway and collided with a wall, leading to a fiery explosion. Out of the 181 passengers and crew onboard, only two survived the tragic incident.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria expressed its deep sympathy for the families of the victims and reaffirmed its support for the people of South Korea.
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to express her sincere condolences to the Government and People of the Republic of Korea for the unfortunate crash of Jeju Air Flight 2216 that occurred on Sunday, December 29th, 2024.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria sympathises with the Government of South Korea and the families of the victims of the deadly plane crash,” the statement read.
The tragic accident, which involved a popular low-cost carrier, has drawn condolences from countries around the world.
The Nigerian government joins other nations in mourning the loss of lives while expressing solidarity with South Korea during this difficult time.
The crash has been described as South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster, prompting widespread calls for enhanced safety measures in the country’s aviation sector.
