BREAKING: Army chief Lagbaja dies at 56

The Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja is dead.

Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Wednesday confirmed his death.

He stated that the COAS passed away on Tuesday night after a period of illness in Lagos.

The statement partly reads, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, regrets to announce the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Chief of the Army Staff, at age 56.”

The late Lieutenant General was born on February 28, 1968, and his military career began when he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987.

On September 19, 1992, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps as a member of the 39th Regular Course.

He was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by Tinubu.

Tinubu had on Tuesday decorated the acting Chief of Army Staff Olufemi Oluyede with a higher rank of Lieutenant General.

The acting COAS was promoted from the rank of Major General to Lieutenant General, days after he was appointed as acting army chief by the President.
