To live a healthy life, it’s essential to avoid unhealthy foods. A list of 20 unhealthy Nigerian foods to avoid in 2025 has been compiled. These foods include Shawarma, Pizza, Hot Dog, Noodles, Bread, Foreign Rice, Spaghetti, Snacks, Butter, Sardines, Canned Food, Sugars, Soft drinks, Energy drinks, Semo, Ofe akwu (banga soup), Biscuits, Ice cream, Imported fruits, and Hydrogenated oils.
Consuming these unhealthy foods can have severe consequences on our health. According to the World Health Organisation, excessive sugar consumption can lead to unhealthy weight gain, increased risk of diseases, high blood pressure, heart disease, damaged teeth, and dental caries.
The World Health Organisation also warns that even fruit juices can have high sugar content and should be consumed in moderation. Furthermore, the use of chemicals for preservation in food storage and preparation is a significant concern.
A nutritionist advises Nigerians to practice safety procedures by ensuring proper storage and washing of food items before eating or cooking. Additionally, embracing plant-based foods, vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and cereals can help reduce the risk of diseases.

A Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Beatrice Ogunba, urges Nigerians to replace junk foods with homemade foods for healthy living. She also advises reducing sugar, salt, and fatty food intake.
In contrast, healthy low-calorie Nigerian foods include Ogi, Oatmeal, Grilled/Baked fish, Turkey breast, Peppersoup, Okpa, Okra, Vegetable Omelette, and Cabbage swallow. These foods are rich in nutrients and can support weight loss.
