Aiyedatiwa pardons 40 prisoners on 60th birthday

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has pardoned 40 prison inmates as part of his administration’s commitment to justice reform and reintegrating convicts into society.

The decision, announced on Sunday, January 12, 2025, coincides with the governor’s 60th birthday. According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, the pardons demonstrate Aiyedatiwa’s dedication to mercy and rehabilitation.

Of the 40 pardoned inmates, 15 were granted outright release, while several death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. Other inmates had their sentences significantly reduced.

The pardon was granted based on recommendations by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN).

“This compassionate gesture underscores Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to extending grace and mercy to these convicts,” Ajulo said. “It represents a vital component of his administration’s ongoing justice sector reforms. The signing of the release orders coincides with the governor’s 60th birthday, marking a significant occasion with an act of grace.”

Dr. Ajulo explained that the council carefully reviewed each case, considering factors like the nature of offences, inmates’ age, health, behaviour, and time served. Insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders ensured fairness in the process.

“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions align with Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empowers state governors to exercise the prerogative of mercy,” the statement added.

The governor chose to forgo birthday celebrations in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tukana), who passed away last weekend.

In a separate message, President Bola Tinubu congratulated Governor Aiyedatiwa on his 60th birthday, praising his leadership and commitment to the people of Ondo State.
