The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has instructed its members to return to work on Monday, December 16, 2024, marking the end of a two-week warning strike that began on December 2, 2024.
In a statement released by ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja, the decision to suspend the industrial action comes after a conciliation meeting held on December 9, 2024, between the union and the Federal Government. The meeting, convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, aimed to address unresolved issues in the union’s work plan with the government.
“During the meeting, a new memorandum of understanding was signed, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for January 23, 2025, to assess compliance and address outstanding matters,” Kpanja stated.
ASUP had embarked on the warning strike over the government’s failure to implement nine critical items outlined in the work plan aimed at resolving longstanding trade disputes.
The union’s National Executive Council is set to reconvene after the January 2025 assessment to review progress and determine the next course of action.
While urging members to resume duties on December 16, Kpanja expressed hope for a lasting resolution: “We thank and commend our members for their commitment and resilience. It is our union’s hope that the government will work diligently to resolve the pending issues.”
