Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that at least 10,000 Nigerians were detained for immigration offences in African and European countries this year. He, however, applauded the contributions of Nigerian immigrants to the global economy, saying Nigeria accounts for the highest of all diaspora remittances in West Africa
Shettima assured that the federal government is committed to tackling the challenges of migration. He commended the contributions of Nigerian immigrants to the global economy, stating that Nigeria accounts for the highest diaspora remittances in West Africa. In 2022, Nigerians in the diaspora accounted for $21.9 billion in remittances, representing 64% of all remittances in West Africa.
Shettima emphasized that migration is a critical driver of global and national development. He noted that Nigerian migrants have become global ambassadors, excelling in fields such as technology, medicine, sports, and creative arts. Nigerian startups founded by migrants attracted over $800 million in investments in 2022, underscoring the transformative potential of Nigerian migrants.
The Vice President acknowledged that Nigeria is both a country of origin and a destination for migrants, with over 1.3 million international migrants living within. However, he cautioned against the constant challenges of irregular migration, stating that the country repatriated about 10,000 of its citizens detained for migration offenses in 2024 alone.
Shettima emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to address the challenges of migration while harnessing its potential for economic growth and resilience. He assured that the federal government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, remains resolute in addressing migration challenges
The government’s response has been multi-faceted, involving several agencies and robust partnerships. The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) continues to lead Nigeria’s migration coordination efforts, including the ongoing review of the National Migration Policy .
Shettima highlighted some of the steps taken to address migration challenges, including the introduction of electronic gates at major airports and the launch of e-passports with advanced security features. He also commended the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for its commitment to innovation in border management .
