Nigerian, Dr Bolu Ogunyemi Elected As President Of Canadian Medical Association

Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, a Nigerian clinical associate professor of medicine, has been elected as the president-elect of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).

The election results were announced after a voting period from November 20 to December 4, with Dr. Ogunyemi emerging victorious.

Dr. Ogunyemi, who has been practicing as a medical dermatologist in St. John’s, Newfoundland, since 2018, will take on the role of president-elect pending approval at the CMA’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025.

He will assume the position of president for a one-year term in May 2026.

In a competitive election, Dr. Ogunyemi went head-to-head with Dr. Susan MacDonald, a prominent advocate for palliative care.
Eligible CMA members in Newfoundland and Labrador had the task of selecting between the two candidates, each offering a distinct vision for the future of Canada’s healthcare system.

Dr. Ogunyemi’s victory marks a significant moment for the Nigerian community in Canada.

“It’s an honour to be chosen to lead this distinguished organization,” Dr. Ogunyemi said after the announcement. “My 15 years of experience in medical leadership have equipped me with valuable insights into the pressing issues our healthcare system faces.”

The Canadian Medical Association represents thousands of physicians across the country, and Dr. Ogunyemi’s leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare in Canada.

As president-elect, Dr. Ogunyemi plans to advocate for a unified medical profession, a stronger healthcare system, and healthier communities.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals to address the challenges that lie ahead.

Dr. Ogunyemi’s career is a testament to his commitment to medical leadership.

Over the past 15 years, he has held numerous leadership roles at Memorial University.

He served as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Social Accountability from 2020 to 2023
Dr. Ogunyemi has also contributed to healthcare governance, including his work as a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association Board of Directors.

His experience in both medical education and governance has prepared him to tackle the challenges facing the healthcare system today.

In his statement after the victory, Dr. Ogunyemi thanked his supporters, colleagues, and family for their unwavering support throughout the campaign.

He also extended his gratitude to Dr. MacDonald for her contributions to healthcare.

“I want to recognize Dr. Susan MacDonald, who has dedicated many years to the healthcare profession, particularly in palliative care,” Dr. Ogunyemi said. “Her contributions are truly commendable.”

Dr. Ogunyemi’s focus as CMA president-elect will be on strengthening the healthcare system, ensuring it is well-equipped to meet the demands of Canadian citizens.

He acknowledged that much work remains to be done in making life better for medical professionals and the communities they serve.
