PHOTOS: Macron welcomes Tinubu in historic visit to France

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu began a historic two-day state visit to France on Thursday, marking the first official state visit by a Nigerian leader to the country in over two decades.

The visit underscores the growing importance of economic cooperation between both nations, as France seeks to bolster its presence in English-speaking Africa amid waning influence in other parts of the continent.

The visit commenced with a formal reception at the historic Invalides memorial complex in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Tinubu with a ceremonial honour, including renditions of both nations’ anthems in the iconic courtyard, setting the stage for discussions aimed at fostering closer ties.

Macron has emphasised a “renewal” of relations between France and African nations since his election in 2017, especially following political upheavals and shifting perceptions that have diminished French influence on the continent. “This trip is an opportunity to deepen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria,” Macron’s office stated.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, boasts a leading position as the continent’s top oil producer and is home to Nollywood, its globally recognised film industry. Despite these strengths, the country faces significant challenges, including widespread poverty affecting over 129 million Nigerians, as well as persistent issues of insecurity and corruption.

For Nigeria, the visit offers a platform to attract foreign investments and enhance partnerships in critical sectors. “Nigeria is looking to build ties in agriculture, security, education, health, youth engagement, innovation, and energy transition,” Tinubu’s office said in a statement. It added that the president had arrived in Paris on Wednesday evening.

The two leaders are expected to engage in comprehensive discussions addressing shared values and priorities, including “finance, solid minerals, trade and investment, and communication,” according to the Nigerian presidency.

Tinubu’s visit comes at a crucial time for Nigeria, which is grappling with surging inflation and rising food prices. Economic cooperation with France could provide new opportunities for development and growth in key areas of Nigeria’s economy.

The trip is a continuation of Macron’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with African nations, particularly in regions where French influence has been historically limited. It also reflects Nigeria’s strategic positioning as a major player in Africa’s political and economic landscape.
