NiDCOM probes alleged unlawful detention of Nigerian in South Africa

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has launched an investigation into allegations surrounding the prolonged detention of Abdul Olatunji, a Nigerian citizen held in South Africa since 2019 without trial.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, assured Nigerians that the Federal Government is committed to uncovering the truth behind the case and ensuring justice is served.

Olatunji’s family has accused South African authorities of fabricating false charges that led to his detention. They have called on the Nigerian government to intervene urgently, expressing frustration over the lack of progress in securing his release.

NiDCOM revealed that the case had not previously been brought to the attention of the commission or the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa.

However, the Nigerian Mission is now actively engaging with South African authorities to demand an explanation.

“We have contacted the acting Nigerian High Commissioner in South Africa, who is in communication with the South African government to clarify the circumstances surrounding this case,” the statement read.

The Nigerian Women’s Association in South Africa has also expressed concern over Olatunji’s plight.

According to the President of the association, Elizabeth Johnson, efforts are underway to visit Olatunji in prison, following media reports that brought the case to light.

NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has reportedly spoken with Olatunji’s brother to reassure the family of the government’s commitment to resolving the matter.

NiDCOM emphasized that it will work closely with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to ensure a thorough investigation.

“We are committed to working with all relevant authorities to ensure justice and fairness for Abdul Olatunji,” the statement added.

South African authorities have yet to respond to the allegations.
