The Lagos State government has demolished illegal shanties along a drainage channel in the Adeniji Adele area of Lagos Island on Monday.
The state commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared a video of the operation on X, revealing the scale of the demolition.
He captioned the video, “Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps commenced operations, removing shanties on the setback of the drainage at Adeniji Adele.”
In the video, LAGESC officials were seen demolishing makeshift structures that had been erected on the drainage setbacks, as well as displacing squatters who had taken refuge under the bridge.
This demolition is part of a series of similar operations that have taken place across the state in recent weeks.
Just last Friday, the Lagos State Government carried out a demolition of 138 shanties along the canal bank in Ajao Estate.
Many of these shanties were being rented out at prices ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000, according to officials.
Additionally, the previous Monday, the LAGESC took action in the Ebute-Ero area, where 54 illegal shanties, housing 84 illegal occupants, along with eight makeshift toilets beneath the Eko Bridge, were removed.
The continuous demolition campaigns are part of the state government’s broader strategy to tackle illegal settlements and improve urban sanitation.
