National grid collapses for the second time in three days

Nigeria’s National Grid collapsed again on Thursday, marking the second outage in just three days.

This setback was confirmed through a post on the grid’s official X account, saying, “Another Grid Setback Experienced.”

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal, power generation dropped to zero megawatts around 11:30 a.m., disrupting operations at all 22 power plants nationwide. Just two days prior, a partial grid failure affected power supply across the country, continuing a trend of frequent power disruptions.

In a statement, Ikeja Electric informed customers of the outage. “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 07 November 2024 at 11:29Hrs affecting supply within our network. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us,” the statement read.

This latest collapse is one of several grid issues recorded this year. Major blackouts occurred on February 4, August 5, and three times in October.

In response, the Federal Government recently highlighted poor maintenance and outdated equipment as the main causes of these repeated collapses emphasizing the urgent need for system upgrades.
