Reactions have trailed the announcement by the United Kingdom (UK) government to ban foreign health workers and caregivers from bringing their families.
The UK revealed that a disproportionate 120,000 dependents accompanied 100,000 workers to the country in 2023.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-led government, on Monday, announced that Nigerians and other immigrants, who want to work as health workers and carers in the UK, should not bring their dependants.
The UK Secretary of State for the Home Department, James Cleverly, disclosed the ban in a statement posted on the Home Office X account.
According to Cleverly, the development was part of the mechanisms to cap the increasing immigration in the UK.
The statement read, “From today, care workers entering the UK on Health and Care Worker visas can no longer bring dependants.
This is part of our plan to deliver the biggest ever cut in migration.”
An infographic was also placed on the account, saying “Banned: Overseas care workers from bringing dependants.
“120,000 people who arrived last year would no longer be eligible under our new rules.
Reacting to the ban, Africans, Asians, and Britons on X slammed the UK government for such a move. They questioned the motive behind the policy asking immigrants to leave their families behind to help the British health system.
The netizens lambasted the Sunak government for such a hostile policy. They threatened that immigrants would migrate to other countries like the United States where they are appreciated.
