Electricity Tarrif : AEDC to disconnect police headquarters, army barracks, others over debts

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has threatened to disconnect the Defence Headquarters and the offices of the army, police and other entities over outstanding electricity debts.

In a circular issued on Saturday, AEDC gave the customers a Monday deadline to clear their backlog of debts or risk disconnection.

The circular, titled ‘Notice of Disconnection’, partly reads, “This is to inform the general public that AEDC will disconnect all customers with outstanding electricity bills on June 3, 2024.”

The list of customers mentioned includes the Nigeria Army, the Nigeria Air Force, the Defence Headquarters, the Federal Capital Development Authority, the Kogi State Government, the Niger State Government, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Nigerian Army Barracks, Power House, SGF House 1, the Head of Service, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

Others are the Federal Ministry of Industry, the Federal Ministry of Trade, the Federal Ministry of Interior, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, the National Stadium, Goodluck Jonathan Athletics Hall, the Federal Ministry of Finance, the National Planning Commission, the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Abuja.

FIJ called AEDC office for details of the debt owed, but a customer care agent told our reporter, “Each of them knows what they are owing.”

It is not the first time a distribution company has threatened to disconnect government agencies over debt. Earlier in the year, Ministry of Power, Presidential Villa and others were accused of owing electricity debts.
