Award-winning singer, Davido, has pledged to support the development of the music department at his alma mater, Babcock University, with a new building and modern equipment.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the promise during a visit to the university in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, on Sunday.
Davido said he plans to invest in the department by building a standalone facility and providing standard music equipment to help train world-class graduates.
“The music department is what I want to expand. I feel like it should be a standalone building,” he said.
“I just personally built an office in Lagos, it’s a high-class, standard music studio, so we are ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper, standard equipment.”
According to him, music and creativity have become major economic drivers in Nigeria.
“Music is oil right now in Nigeria. Creativity right now is oil,” he added.
The singer, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Babcock University in 2015, also stressed the importance of education, dismissing claims by some young people that schooling is a scam.
“I will definitely say that education is not a scam,” Davido said.
“There are people who didn’t go to school and made it, but it would be wrong for anyone to say education is a scam.”
He noted that balancing his music career with academics was challenging, especially as his fame grew while still in school.
Davido revealed that he almost dropped out but was encouraged to complete his studies by family members and lecturers.
He also credited the institution with instilling discipline in him, describing it as one of the biggest lessons he gained from his time at the university.
“Apart from my wife, whom I met at the university, I’ll say discipline is another thing I took away from Babcock,” he said.
Davido was received by the university management led by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, alongside excited students who welcomed him back to campus.
Speaking during the visit, Ojewole described the singer as a worthy ambassador of the institution and commended his global success in the music industry.
He also noted the longstanding relationship between the Adeleke family and the institution.
