NAOSS, NANS back Gov Abiodun for Ogun East senatorial seat
The National Association of Ogun State Students and the National Association of Nigerian Students, have endorsed Dapo Abiodun following his emergence as the All Progressives Congress consensus candidate for the Ogun East senatorial seat.
In a joint statement released in Abeokuta, the student leaders described the decision as well considered, citing Abiodun’s track record in education, youth engagement, and governance.
They highlighted improvements in school infrastructure, increased funding for tertiary institutions, and bursary support for students, adding that his move to the Senate could strengthen representation for Ogun East at the national level.
According to Olubodun and Akinbodunse, Governor Abiodun’s tenure has witnessed significant interventions in the education sector, including the rehabilitation of primary and secondary schools, improved subvention to state-owned tertiary institutions, and bursary payments to indigent students.
They, however, argued that his transition to the Senate would further consolidate these gains and give Ogun East a strong voice at the National Assembly.
The statement added that Abiodun’s leadership style, which prioritises inclusion and dialogue, has endeared him to the student community.
A recall was made of his administration’s regular engagement with student bodies during policy formulation, as well as his prompt response to issues affecting campuses across the state.
Olubodun and Akinbodunse urged APC members in Ogun East to close ranks and work for the party’s victory, stressing that a consensus candidacy would save the party from rancour and position it for a seamless outing at the polls.
They averred that Abiodun’s emergence was a product of wide consultations and represented the collective will of leaders in the district.
The two student leaders also called on youths and students across the nine local government areas in Ogun East to mobilise massively for the governor, describing him as “a friend of Nigerian students” whose legislative agenda would prioritise education funding, job creation, and gender-friendly policies.
The statement concluded by congratulating Governor Abiodun on his emergence and pledging the support of the student movement in Ogun State towards his victory, emphasising “his record in office provides a solid foundation for effective representation in the Senate”.
