385 bag first-class in UNIBEN’s combined convocation

The University of Benin has announced that a total of 385 students will be receiving first-class honours at its combined 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 convocation ceremonies.

According to reports, 206 students earned first-class honours in the 2021/2022 academic session, while 179 students achieved the same distinction in the 2022/2023 session.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Lilian Salami, shared the exciting news on Monday during the 49th/50th convocation and 54th Founders’ Day media briefing held in Benin City.

During the briefing, Salami revealed that a total of 20,630 students will graduate with various degrees, including first degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, and PhDs, across both academic sessions.

Specifically, 10,609 students will graduate from the 2021/2022 session, while 10,021 students will be awarded their degrees from the 2022/2023 session.

The convocation ceremonies, which will also mark the university’s continued commitment to academic excellence, are scheduled to take place between November 22 and November 23, 2024.

Salami expressed pride in the university’s growing academic stature, highlighting the recognition and celebration of outstanding individuals within and outside the institution.

In addition to the academic achievements, Salami revealed that the university would confer the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus on seven distinguished academics during this year’s convocation.

Furthermore, three prominent Nigerian personalities will receive honorary doctorates, recognizing their significant contributions to society.

“It is gratifying to state that the University of Benin continues to beam its searchlight internally and nationwide to identify and honour distinguished personalities found worthy to be conferred with the recognition as Professors Emeritus and Honorary Doctorate Degrees,” Salami said.

This convocation, however, will be Salami’s final one as the Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, marking the end of her tenure at the institution.

Her leadership has been instrumental in furthering the university’s academic reputation, and this milestone will be celebrated as a fitting close to her time in office.
