222 died in road accidents 2024 – Oyo FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Oyo Sector Command, reported a total of 222 fatalities from road traffic crashes across the state in 2024.

This data was shared in Ibadan during the command’s end-of-year review, as detailed in a statement signed by Sector Commander, Mrs. Rosemary Alo.

According to Mrs. Alo, the number of deaths in 2024 marked a decline compared to the 270 fatalities recorded in 2023.

The data stemmed from 304 crashes documented in 2024, a notable drop from the 495 incidents recorded the previous year.

The sector commander also revealed that 779 people sustained injuries in 2024, a significant reduction from the 1,321 injuries recorded in 2023.

Furthermore, the total number of individuals involved in crashes decreased from 2,935 in 2023 to 1,795 in 2024.

Similarly, the number of vehicles involved in crashes dropped from 794 in 2023 to 412 in 2024.

Mrs. Alo attributed the decline in RTC figures to the corps’ intensified sensitisation campaigns and stricter enforcement measures carried out throughout the year.

She highlighted the corps’ shift in advocacy efforts, stating, “Initially, the focus has always been on drivers, but now, we are telling passengers to note that more people lose their lives in an accident than the driver.”

She also emphasized the importance of passenger involvement, adding, “The corps embarked on inclusive advocacy in 2024, sensitising passengers to always engage their rights to speak out when a driver drives recklessly.”
