12 Dead, Two Injured in Kogi Auto Crash — FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 12 people lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred on Friday along the Ejule–Enugu highway in Kogi State.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Tenimu Etuku, disclosed this during a briefing with journalists in Lokoja on Saturday, describing the incident as tragic and deeply unfortunate. He noted that one of the victims was a child.
According to Etuku, the crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. in the Iboko community of Idah Local Government Area. The accident involved an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus operated by Romchi Mass Transit, which was travelling from Abuja to the eastern part of the country.
He explained that the bus rammed into a stationary, faulty articulated vehicle that had been parked along the road, attributing the collision to over-speeding.
FRSC personnel who responded to the scene carried out rescue operations, evacuating the injured victims to Mercy of Jesus Hospital in Ejule for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a morgue.
Etuku expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated the dangers of excessive speed and reckless overtaking.
“At this yuletide, motorists must be careful and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid such accidents and the wastage of precious lives. I believe this is one way to help the FRSC and the Federal Government reduce the alarming rate of road traffic crashes and fatalities in the country.
“I hereby urge drivers to exercise patience and maintain safe driving practices, especially during long-distance journeys this yuletide,” he advised.
The road linking Ejule in Kogi State to Enugu is part of Nigeria’s federal road network connecting the North-Central and South-East regions.
Like many major inter‑regional routes, it experiences higher traffic volumes during festive periods, increasing the risk of accidents.
The FRSC has repeatedly warned motorists to avoid excessive speed, reckless overtaking, and driving while fatigued, particularly on long-distance journeys.
